Last spring Q Collective partner, Mark Sanders, and I taught Experimental Typography at Parsons The New School for Design. The class challenged students to redefine the conventions of typography and in the process, discover the potential for enhanced communication. The first half of the semester was spent on subproblems or short projects that encouraged exploration and innovation in two, three and four dimensions. During the second half of the semester we looked at typographic experimentation as process for a community project with the organization, Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx).

SSBx advocates for environmental justice through innovative, economically sustainable projects that are informed by community needs. One of the projects in development is a bicycle/pedestrian greenway along the South Bronx waterfront, which will provide much needed open space, waterfront access and opportunities for mixed used economic development.

With the addition of more street trees in the area, the SSBx challenged our students to develop innovative ways to communicate the economic and environmental value of trees to residents. Opportunities to create wayfinding systems, signage or other forms of visual communication were encouraged in an effort to bring attention to the benefits trees offer the community.

Trees in NYC parks live about 50 years, where as trees on the street live less than a decade.

In the process of developing their solutions, students split into teams to research what threatens street trees as well as why they are valuable to the community. Leaves filter the air and provide shade while root systems can prevent groundwater pollution — all factors that improve the quality of life for residents. The students also looked at the demographics and history of the neighborhood and the vernacular art, typography and materials. We considered what components could be re-used, how they would deteriorate over time and the resources of the SSBx.

Students spent several weeks doing field research, sharpening their messages, making mockups and refining their ideas. The engaging final projects took many forms including poetry, dolls, caution tape, cardboard logs and more. The final proposals were compiled into a book (see PDF) with photos and explanations of the ideas.
